Back to School! / by Mickael Chavet

Last week I had the chance to be invited as a guest lecturer by Jens Blumrodt, Program Director of the Master of Science in Sports & Tourism Management at Rennes School of Business. I had the priviledge to speak in front of his students, during a class about Strategic Management in Sports Organization for the flagship course of the program, namely the Sports and Tourism Management one.

See the logo? And the claim? Unframed thinking, isn’t that interesting for a photographer?

Rennes is my hometown in France and the Rennes School of Business is where I graduated from the very first cohort of the MSc. In Sports & Tourism Management. What an emotion to speak to my 15 years younger future fellow alumni, even if it’s hard to stomach it has been f-i-f-t-e-e-n years since I last put foot in the school. In fairness I came back, invited to be in the school panel while the school was seeking for the AACSB accreditation - but finding myself on the other side of the blackboard as a guest speaker is an entirely other experience.

During the class we have been exchanging on topics like internationalization of sports organization, career possibilities in this fascinating and competitive industry. And of course my favourite part, a dynamic Q&A about Sports Photography, covering aspects about photographing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Many were interested in knowing that studying business management can lead to a photography career. Truth be told, all the skills and competencies acquired during my Master here at the Rennes School of Business, whether strategic management, business accounting, project management, target settings and execution, and of course marketing communication, are all at stakes and useful every day for me in my activities.

This hall lined with palm trees… Is there a better place to study?

I am impressed about how this already top-notch business schools further expanded (there was one campus while I was a student, there are no less than 4 now). Jens hasn’t changed one bit (kudos!) and I have been impressed by the drive and maturity I saw in very welcoming and interested students. I am very much looking forward to see what each and every of them will accomplish and confident our path will cross sooner or later.
